Coordination Polymers of Metal Complexes with Ligands Containing α-Hydroxy Acetate and Pyridine Groups.

Title

Coordination Polymers of Metal Complexes with Ligands Containing α-Hydroxy Acetate and Pyridine Groups.

Description

Ligands containing alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) groups can coordinate to transition metals. Several examples have been shown to cleave the AHA group upon photolysis when coordinated to +3 metal ions, such as Fe3+. This can be useful in several applications. New ligands have been synthesized by reaction of 4-amino-2-hydroxybutyric acid with pyridine-2-carboxaldehyde or 2-benzoylpyridine to form their respective imine products. Several X-ray crystal structures of Zn(II), Cu(II), and Ni(II) complexes of these ligands show multiple modes of coordination. Complexes of Zn(II) and Cu(II) have produced one-dimensional coordination polymers with both 1:1 and 1:2 ligand to metal ratios. A Ni(II) complex shows a cube-like cluster with a 3:4 ligand to metal ratio.
