A Crime Against Our Future: Clinton County Ohio’s Divestment in Child and Youth Health, the Lasting Community Health Outcomes, and Possible Resolutions
Description
The Clinton County, Ohio child and youth population has had an uptick in poor health indicators in the past decade. These indicators specifically pertain to physical health. The “Community Health Needs Assessment Report,” conducted in Clinton County in 2015 and 2020, shows there is evidence that markers related to healthy development have declined since 2015. From 2015 to 2020, data shows that child obesity prevalence increased by 10.9%. According to “County Health Rankings and Roadmaps” data collected in 2019, only 40% of people in Clinton County have direct access to exercise opportunities compared to the state and the national average of 77% and 80%, respectively. The health markers discussed are important because of the long-term, negative effects they have on populations, wherein individuals are at greater risk for developing Type II diabetes, heart disease, and other serious morbidities. This research involved a qualitative approach, gathering information about what active community members believe are the causes of poor health outcomes in children as well as possible solutions. In-person individual interviews were conducted to execute the study. The results of the research revealed certain themes that contributed to child and youth health decline, including education, lack of available recreational spaces, underutilization of existing pedestrian and recreation spaces, and transportation limitations impacting food security and exercise. Participants identified possible solutions for improving health, including expanded programming, improved transportation and connectivity, and grants that can be utilized for funding of improvements.
